Invisalign in San Diego for Adults & Teens

Invisalign in San Diego starts with one question: can clear aligners fix your teeth, or do you need braces? At Smiles By Design Dentistry in Carmel Mountain Ranch, we answer it at a free consultation with a 3D scan. This page will walk you through how treatment works, what it costs and how insurance and financing apply.

How Invisalign Moves Teeth

Invisalign is a clear aligner system made by Align Technology. Instead of brackets and wires, you wear a series of removable plastic trays made from Align's SmartTrack material. Each tray is shaped slightly differently from the last, and each one moves certain teeth by a small amount, about 0.25 millimetres per tray.

The iTero scan and your plan

Treatment starts with an iTero scan, a 3D digital model of your teeth taken with a handheld scanner instead of putty impressions. From that model, Align's ClinCheck software maps every stage of tooth movement, and you see a preview of the finished result before you commit. Our guide to how Invisalign works step by step goes through each stage.

Wearing and changing aligners

Aligners only work while they are in. Wear them 20 to 22 hours a day, take them out to eat or drink anything except water, and brush before you put them back. You move to the next set every one to two weeks and come in for checkups so we can track progress and hand over new aligners. The habits that keep treatment on schedule are in our list of Invisalign dos and don'ts.

What Invisalign Can Fix

Invisalign corrects most of the alignment problems people come in with:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite, underbite and crossbite, depending on severity
  • Teeth that have shifted back after earlier braces

Bite problems vary the most. A mild overbite often responds well to aligners, while a severe skeletal underbite can need braces or jaw surgery. Our article on overbite and underbite explains how the two differ.

Invisalign suits teenagers as well as adults. The deciding factor for teens is usually wear time, since aligners left in a backpack do not move teeth.

Invisalign or Braces

Both straighten teeth. The difference is how you live with them. Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, come out for meals and let you brush and floss normally. Braces are fixed, so there is no wear time to manage, and they remain the usual choice for complex bite corrections.

For mild to moderate cases, results are similar and so is the price. Our cost guides put braces at $3,000 to $7,000 and Invisalign at $4,000 to $8,000 in San Diego. At your consultation we compare both for your teeth and recommend the one that fits. The full side by side comparison is in Invisalign compared with braces.

How Long Treatment Takes

Most Invisalign treatment takes 6 to 18 months. Complex cases can take up to two years. The number of aligners in your ClinCheck plan sets the timeline, and missed wear time stretches it.

After the last aligner

Teeth drift back without a retainer. After treatment you move to retainers, often Align's Vivera retainers, worn full time at first and then at night. Most dentists recommend night wear for as long as you want to keep the result. Our guide to retainer care after Invisalign covers the schedule and cleaning.

Invisalign Cost in San Diego

Invisalign in San Diego typically costs $4,000 to $8,000. The price follows the complexity of the case, because more tooth movement means more aligners, a longer plan and higher laboratory fees from Align.

As a guide to where your case may fall:

  • Mild cases, such as small gaps or minor crowding: $3,000 to $4,500
  • Moderate crowding, spacing or bite correction: $4,500 to $6,500
  • Complex bite correction with longer treatment: $6,000 to $8,000

You get an exact fee after the scan, once the ClinCheck plan shows how many aligners you need.

Insurance, HSA and FSA

A dental plan with an orthodontic benefit usually pays for Invisalign the way it pays for braces. Align Technology states that many dental insurance plans cover Invisalign treatment the same way they cover braces, and its 2021 data from OrthoFi put the average orthodontic coverage at $1,772. That benefit comes from a separate lifetime maximum, not your annual maximum, and not every plan includes it for adults.

Whatever insurance leaves, you can pay with pretax money. IRS Publication 502 lists braces as dental treatment, and Align confirms Invisalign can be paid from an HSA or FSA. We apply PPO orthodontic benefits for you, so bring your insurance card to the consultation.

Financing

CareCredit and Cherry both offer monthly payment plans, so the fee can be spread over the course of treatment. We go through the options at your consultation.

Invisalign specials

Our August 2025 National Align Your Teeth Day special ended on 31 August 2025, and no Invisalign promotion is running now. The consultation, the iTero scan and the treatment preview are free.

When you compare Invisalign deals anywhere, compare what is included rather than the headline price: the number of aligners, the treatment length, laboratory fees, checkups, and whether retainers are part of the fee.

Your First Invisalign Visit

The consultation starts with an exam. We check for cavities and gum problems first, because teeth should be healthy before they are moved. If you are also due a teeth cleaning, tell us when you book. We then take the iTero scan, show you the treatment preview, and give you the fee, the expected length of treatment and what your insurance is likely to pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Invisalign cost in San Diego?

Invisalign in San Diego typically costs $4,000 to $8,000. Mild cases run $3,000 to $4,500, moderate cases $4,500 to $6,500 and complex cases $6,000 to $8,000. At Smiles By Design you get your exact fee after a free consultation and iTero scan, once the ClinCheck plan shows how many aligners you need.

Does insurance cover Invisalign?

It does if your dental plan includes an orthodontic benefit. Align Technology says many plans cover Invisalign the same way they cover braces, and its OrthoFi data put average coverage at $1,772. The benefit comes from a separate orthodontic lifetime maximum, and some plans cover only children. Bring your card and we will check.

Is there an Invisalign special at Smiles By Design right now?

No. Our August 2025 National Align Your Teeth Day special ended on 31 August 2025, and no Invisalign promotion is running now. The consultation, iTero 3D scan and treatment preview are free, and CareCredit or Cherry can spread the cost over monthly payments.

How long does Invisalign take?

Most cases take 6 to 18 months, and complex cases up to two years. You change aligners every one to two weeks, and the number of aligners in your ClinCheck plan sets the timeline. Wearing them less than 20 to 22 hours a day makes treatment take longer.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Most patients feel slight pressure when they switch to a new set of aligners, which is the trays moving teeth. There are no wires or brackets to rub the cheeks, so most people find aligners more comfortable than braces.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for Invisalign?

Yes. IRS Publication 502 counts braces as dental treatment, and Align Technology confirms Invisalign qualifies for HSA and FSA payment. Many patients use pretax money to cover whatever their orthodontic insurance benefit does not pay. Keep your itemised receipts for your account administrator.

Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?

Yes. Teeth tend to drift back toward their old positions once aligners stop holding them. You wear a retainer, often a Vivera retainer from Align, full time at first and then at night, usually for as long as you want to keep the result.
